Black Emo

Black Emo

So I’m working on this mix for a homie, lover, friend of that straight up emotional no bullshit I’m feeling like crap on a cracker type shit. I’m talking about 70’s British gay boys killing themselves, and Patron Saints of empty promises and bottles. You know, that shit that white boys be killing. I got a friend that only listens to whiny white boys with guitars and I admit to being a sometimes aficionado. I mean I’m still searching out all those Van Morrison tracks that sound like “It stoned me”. I think there’s something to be learned from these whiny white boys. It’s like they have totally lost the notion of giving a fuck. Not in that screw society way, but more like they’re not caring what people think about them. They’re the kids that skin their knees on the playground and instead of laughing it off, or at least having the common deny to go into the bathroom to hide their pain, they howl for hours on end I the middle of the playground of popular culture going “Look, I’m in fucking pain! Help me!”

Anyway, so I’m working on this mix and I just have to go to those uncomfortable places and I ask “Where is the black Emo music?” Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate the Incredible Moses Leroy, and that Cee-Lo Danger Mouse “Crazy” shit is off the chain, though for those of you that have only heard the single, you need to be hitting up the cd. “Just a thought” is really what motivated this post. I’m asking about a cultural space of black emoticons that don’t worry about being savvy. True, we have soul. But one thing I both love and hate about soul, neo-soul, classic soul, whatever the fuck has the soul moniker on it, is its refinement. I don’t trust the spell checked love letter, but that might just be me. Sometimes I like hearing the rough edges between the instrument and the singers voice. Like that Lauryn Hill unplugged album. I mean if the sun is shining and I’m happy, then there is no way I’m putting that album on. But if I’ve got a cold, just came home from work, and just realized a baby could’ve born since the last time I got some play, then that album is exactly what I need. I know it kind of sounds like a diss, but its not, really. I’m not afraid to admit I’ve got a range of emotions, and sometimes I’m depressed as all hell and need music that corresponds to that. If it can come from black people then I feel a little less alone. I mean for real are love and lost the only emotions we get to sing about? Seems like the black soul got pigeon holed into a Freudian bowl filled with Thanatos and Eros, gotta be more than what the Euros are putting out, ya feel me? Sorry had to go to rhyme for a second.

So I’m looking for black Emo Music. That unstylized, uncomfortable musical non-genre generated by those of negrodial descent that laments itself. Give a link and you’ll get a thanks. You want a cd, send an e-mail to jahpupa@gmail.com and I’ll send you an address. In return you’ll get a gang of our lovely stickers. More soon

P.S. Here’s what made it to the Emo cd

1.Cypress ave.- Van Morrison

2. I don’t think I’ll ever get over you- Colin Hay

3. Mad World- Jules verne (I know that’s not his name but I don’t feel like looking it up)

4. Nobody’s fault but mine-Nina Simone

5.Driving (Acoustic mix)-Everything but the girl

6. Rags and old iron-Nina Simone

7. Country robot/letter to Dorothy-Incredible Moses Leroy

8. Just a thought-Gnarles barkley

9. Things behind the sun- Nick Drake

10. Maybe Not-Cat Power

11. Song cry-Jay-z and the roots

12. The Chain-Fleetwood mac

13 Christmas card from a hooker in Minneapolis-Tom Waits

14. Trouble Me-10000 maniacs

15. Girls room-Liz Phair

haha, wow I hope you guys know that we ( black emo/oreo's/whatever you wanna call it) eat this stuff up. you guys (regular black people) are so closed minded about everything. I personally love the negative attention and looks I get from black kids at my school, I love how jealous they get because we know they'll be stuck in they're little hip hop society box forever, have fun.

Buddy you are so confused its kind of scary. I love the little black emo kids. Read closely, I was bigging up all the little whiny white boys with their acoustic guitars and sentimentality. Black kids that do it are even sweeter in my book.

Jesus, do people stroll the internet just looking to get into shit?

hey im a black emo girl too and it doesnt show because im scared. when im alone i start listening to all these rock ,heavey metal and screamo music like i love it its so esay to relate to . but im a poser because anytime im near black kids i act all fake like a typical black girl who yells alot and gives adittude and also my frds always make fun of emos so its so hard for me to come out and say that im a black emo and i love screamo. i cry alot because i dont really feel that i belong anywhere and im in the wrong person like my dad and sister said. i dont listen to hip hop or r&b and the only hip hop artist i actually know is kanye west but i dont listen to him. i just tryed to listening to him . the only person who knows im emo is my close frd and cousin and my broher and sister who dont accept it .everyday im trying to look for some hip hop artist or r&b artist to like but it just doesnt intrest me and i guess i am who i am and im emo and one day ill hopfully find my confidence and say i love all these bands and style but for now im just trying to figure out if im wrong or right . thx afrogeek for writing this and making it a topic because this is the first time i told anyone or anything hehe.

I don't know what i am. Iam black/puerto rican, don't get me wrong. I'm proud of it, but l love all music even hard metal and rockbands.i listen to anything that gets me into it.there is at least 1 song that will get me liking that genre.but with emo i can kinda relate.sometimes i get so sad or angry at stupid stuff.l know everyone has problems but mine are hard for me. i play the guitar and dress with t-shirts of afi.but i still listen to don omar and daddy yankee with soulja boy and beyonce. on the other hand i luv fob,p!atd, afi, and others.so i have my share problems being a kinda black/puerto rican hiphop alternatvie emo girl in chicago

Wow, these post were made for me. Yes, i'm black and probably a poser. If i'm infront of people I act fake (comparing who I really am), not just around other black people but whites too. Seeing tha tthey think of me as being white, and ask me if I consider my self white, which I don't. But, is there a such thing as acting black and white? I mean didn't black people event the first form of rock music, and if they didnt does it matter. Alot of people from all races, nationalities ect, listen to hip-hop and rap which isn't a big problem.

Yes i also am probably one of the poser black emo's because it's so hard to tell people at my school and my family tat im and emo. the only people that know are my 2 cousins who are black emos. its really hard to come out in school because i go to a private school and i live in boston. i have never seen any emo black kids other than my cousins and i jus cant wait to get accepted into college so i can start a new life and can start out being known as an emo... hopefully i get into college in california with my cousins so it will be easier for me to come out because i will be with my cousins.

I'm look at some of these comments and wondering to myself, what planet do you live on. It doesn't matter what race you are, who you are dating, you can be who you want to be.Stop labeling things as black and white.......someone can like hiphop or metal and be of any race.Don't hate on anyone for liking what they like. You are not better than anyone. You don't have to love or hate but at least respect it.If people stare at you ...smile at them.Whatever people want to call you.You know who you are as a person.People are always going to talk about you,no matter who you are,so stop complaining online about it.Don't disrespect your culture to be anything, that is first. There will always be racism. Its not first time in your life to find racism especially on internet. Its rare to see in emo that are black in real life where I'm from, which is in Brooklyn.

Live your own truth!

If you really wanna be emo kids so do it no matter what other people say or think about it. There's alot of white rappers so why you cant be Black emos. Go 'head! Dont let the stereotypes get you

Holy SHIT! No offense to those who have posted, especially those that I'm about to address, but seriously, some of you are acting like you're telling your parents you're gay/transgender/etc! Okay, you're Emo, so what? I honestly don't think they give that much of a damn. It's just a fashion style, not a lifestyle or sexuality. You could even add, "Hey, at least I'm not gay, right?" at the end of your "talk" (and I don't think it should matter either way, but, hey, some people are still living in a world where it is somehow psychologically and physiologically abnormal and wrong for people to be non-heterosexual despite scientific evidence to the contrary).

Anyway, my point is...well...actually I guess my point is that you're emo...I guess.

I take that back, it is a lifestyle, but it's not like you're addicted to crystal meth or something bad, you just prefer a different kind of music.

So , I'm black & emo . I think that when you state a comment sayinq ' black people ' you should really think about how many black people there are in the world like come on dude . I have snack bits , tease my hair , wear tight ass skinny jeans , random ass hell and plus i'm gay ( not sure if that has anything to do with it lol ) just like most white emo kids or whoever is emo . So yeah that was kinda offensive

im a black emo too, and its hard to get accepted. my brother doesnt like it because im not into rap and stuff, and my mom mistakes it as goth. i get bullied at school too. and im younger than most of you, about to be 12. theres nothing to be ashamed of about being emo- i am who i am, if you dont like it, then screw you and go away. i used to be a preppy girl in fifth grade, but then i found this band called black veil brides. i listed to their song knives and pens, and it truley changed my life. i quit cheerleading, and got rid of everything in my past, and it made me who i am today. im just glad there are others out there like me :)

There's no problem with black people being emo.
